convergence of food, pharma and population genetics leading to predictive, preventive,
personalized healthcare. Avesthagen employs 500+ people worldwide and is
headquartered in Bangalore, India.
Avesthagen has built and continues to build integrated, systems biology
approach of capabilities, infrastructure and technology that allows for and
facilitates ‘cross talk’ between numerous disciplines, leading to innovative
solutions. The business model of the company is to combine IP & product
development for long term sustainable revenue generation and value addition,
with R&D services and collaborative research programs for/with other parties
to generate revenue stream and market focus.
Avesthagen has four strategic business units –
Under bioPharmaceuticals, a substantial pipeline of biosimilars is being developed
in partnership with Cipla Ltd. The group focuses on pathway engineering and development of novel expression systems, d
evelopment of product specific bioassays and design of novel animal component free production media, generation of
over-expressing stable cell lines, development of proprietary expression platforms and novel, scalable processes
in microbial and mammalian systems. Scale-up, manufacturing and supply of commercial scale material is
done through a joint venture. 200 - 1,000L cGMP facilities have been set-up, several acquisition targets
are under review and the first products are expected to reach the market in 2009.
bioNutrition focuses on developing scientifically validated, nutritional bioactives
from traditional Indian medicinal plants, for prevention or treatment of degenerative conditions
such as diabetes, obesity, CVD and bone health. We also work on performance and stress, skincare and
digestion through use of proprietary tools. We target both food and pharma markets and, coupled with
marketing strategies developed with global leaders and the acquisition of two businesses, the bioNutrition unit
is expending fast.
On the OTC front, we specialize in superior Ayurvedic (indigenous Indian medical science) herbal
extract ingredients but we also source botanical biomass from all over the world.
Avesthagen has a catalogue of over 40 standardized extracts and multiple grades of innovative specialty
products that set the highest standards for purity and concentration of active constituents.
Many of our leading products have strong intellectual property positions. These include trademarks
and patents that employ process, composition and method of use claims.
On the food side, Avesthagen follows the philosophy of organic, healthy and tasty foods
(crackers, bars, muesli, drinks, etc) while adding value by bringing to market product
lines prepared using organic ingredients or fortified with clinically validated nutritional
bioactives sourced from traditional Indian medicine. Developing products adapted to consumer
nutritional needs and tastes has been our commitment from day one.
bioAgriculture focuses on stress resistance and nutrition enhancement in plants.
It hosts two wholly owned subsidiaries as well as large collaborations with the Groupe Limagrain and sees
itself as a vehicle of seed transmutation, wherein the seeds for the future will be developed through a
combination of genetics, breeding, natural and artificial variation and transgenics.
Recognizing the cyclical nature of agriculture and research, and the fundamental economics of a
profitable enterprise, Avesthagen combines in-house research, joint ventures and client-driven research
opportunities to develop the seeds of tomorrow and the requisite technology today in a profitable manner.
The in-house programs focus on varieties with value-added traits, capable of being cultivated under adverse
conditions as well as nutrition-focused projects. In addition, this division provides large food manufacturers
and exporters with testing and certification expertise. Exclusive Licensee of GeneticID USA
for India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Offers plant marker development through
assignment of polymorphisms to phenotypes/traits/genes: microsatellite, SNP,
RAPD, AFLP, SCAR, SSLP, CAPS etc. Customized Molecular Services: Plant
molecular biology, flanking sequence discovery, vector and construct
construction, sequencing, promoter cloning, cDNA and BAC library services.
Offers licensing opportunities for HybridFITTM, DroughtFITTM, Lyco-PLUS and SalinityFITTM
patented technologies.
In Science & Innovation, products and technologies are being developed through collaborative
R&D with global partners in the life sciences industry. Over the years several large scale collaborations have
emerged from this program and evolved into new ventures. Others have also attracted equity investments in the
parent company. The Science & Innovation business unit of Avesthagen employs a Systems Biology approach
for the dissection of molecular mechanisms in human diseases and works towards delivery of innovative
solutions for predictive, preventive, personalized healthcare. Our competencies in managing the diverse
array of technologies in a focused manner by following a multidisciplinary approach enables us to efficiently
co-develop novel therapies with our partners in pharma & food business, and academic institutions.

international experience.
To take a product or a technology from concept to market is Science & Innovation’s greatest strength.
This path goes across therapeutics areas and is driven by excellence in understanding tomorrow’s market and fully
integrating competencies in Genomics, Proteomics, Transcriptomics, Bioinformatics, Metabolomics and Lead Optimisation,
Recombinant Protein Expression, Cancer Stem Cells, Diagnostics and Vaccines Development and large scale
Population Genomics Programs.
Avesthagen has established world class, state-of-the-art laboratory
facilities in India that include, in addition to its general lab space,
clean room, a radio isotope labs, a high throughput sequencing and
genotyping facilities, a bio safety level P2 green house space for
